Its in the top 3 most racist years, and its 3rd, so that is not good. Some how we need to fix that.
Interracial marriage has been legal in the U.S. since 1967. In 2008, a record 14.6% of all first marriages in the U.S. were interracial marriages. Nine percent of whites, 16% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics, and 31% of Asians married someone whose race or ethnicity was different from their own. In 2008, of all the people living with an HIV diagnosis in 40 U.S. states and 5 independent areas, 46% were African American/black, 31.6% were white, 20% were Hispanic/Latino, 1.3% were multiple races, 0.6% were Asian, 0.4% were American Indian/Alaska Native, and 0.04% were Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander.
Racism History
It started in the 19th centrury, and had religion and slavery involved. Then during WWII Nazi Germany were racist to jews, and even harmed and killed them. Then In the 1960's (involving blacks) in the south there was racism with the KKK and the bapsit church insident. Even then they killed and really disrespected blacks. But in the 21st Century its definaly not as common but it still occurs. And we need to stop it.
What we are doing to try and stop racism.
In school we can help stop racism:
- Object to racist jokes and insults.
- Organize an inter-cultural music or film festival.
- Invite guests to speak on racism and human rights.
- Organize a poster or essay contest.
- Show films on prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination and racism.
- Examine the contents of television, film, radio and newspapers for stereotypes. Identify and discuss the stereotypes.
- Find out about human rights organizations in your area and what role they play.
- Suggest that your class or school develop a policy statement against all forms of racial discrimination.
In the communty we can help too:
- Take part in activities marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination every March 21.
- Join organizations dealing with issues of racism and human rights.
- Suggest that your local newspaper publish a special section on the racial and cultural diversity of your community.
- Create a speakers bureau of persons willing to speak about racism and human rights.
- Explore ways in which community organizations can work together to promote positive race relations.
